Tropical storm Rafael

October 13, 2012

—Tropical Storm Rafael formed in the eastern Caribbean near the Lesser Antilles on Friday evening.

Rafael will bring heavy rain and gusty winds to the Lesser Antilles through the weekend. Rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches with locally as much as 10 inches could trigger flash flooding and mudslides.

The storm will pass near or over the Virgin Islands Saturday into Saturday night and eventually accelerate northward. Rafael will then pass near Bermuda on Tuesday. This path will prevent Rafael from affecting the United States mainland directly.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for portions of the Lesser Antilles, including the Virgin Islands and the Puerto Rican islands of Culebra and Vieques. A tropical storm watch remains in effect for the rest of Puerto Rico.
