Death toll rises to 5 after tornadoes whip through Midwest, level town

At least five people have been killed and 19 others injured in an unexpected late-season outbreak of more than 70 tornadoes and intense thunderstorms that swept the Midwest on Sunday, flattening homes in a swath of central Illinois. Reports from across the affected area were still coming in late in the day. The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center website counted at least 76 separate tornado reports from Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.
