Storm cancellations top 1,000 as flight woes drag on

Air travelers face another day of headaches Tuesday as stormy weather snarls flights for the fifth day in a row. Already, more than 1,300 flights had been canceled nationwide as of 11:30 a.m., according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.
With snow falling across much of the mid-Atlantic, cancellations are piling up at airports in the storm’s path. At Newark Liberty, more than 260 flights (combined departures and arrivals) had been canceled as of 11:30 a.m. ET.

More than 200 cancellations are being reported at a number of other busy airports, including New York LaGuardia, Philadelphia and Washington Reagan National. Chicago O’Hare has more than 120 cancellations and Washington Dulles more than 90 cancellations.
Also hard hit is Dallas/Fort Worth, which has struggled with poor weather much of the past week. Tuesday’s 230 cancellations add to the roughly 3,000 cancellations suffered by DFW fliers just since Saturday.
Delays also are problematic for fliers on Tuesday. As of 11:30 a.m. ET, the Federal Aviation Administration’s flight-delay map shows back-ups of up to 2 hours on arrivals headed to four of the nation’s most delay-prone airports: New York LaGuardia, New York JFK, Newark Liberty and Philadelphia.
In response to the disruption, airlines are waiving change fees for flights at airports from Texas to New England. Among the notable winter weather waivers are: American, United, Delta (separate waivers for greater New York, the mid-Atlantic and New England), US Airways, JetBlue and Virgin America.
