Obama On NFL Concussions: ‘I Would Not Let My Son Play Pro Football’ President Barack Obama again voiced concern about the National Football League’s concussion rate, acknowledging that players “know what they’re doing” but adding that he would not want his child to play the sport at the professional level. In a profile published by the New Yorker on Sunday, journalist David Remnick asked the president if he has mixed feelings about watching NFL games in light of reports about former players experiencing early onset dementia and other serious conditions as a result of their years in the league. “I would not let my son play pro football,” Obama said. “But, I mean, you…

Lawmakers: Russia may have aided Snowden

WASHINGTON — Three top congressional lawmakers said Sunday that Russia may have assisted Edward Snowden in leaking classified national security intelligence. Russia has hosted Snowden in the wake of the leak scandal, but the nation has not been implicated in assisting the former National Security Agency contractor on the front end of the largest U.S. intelligence leak in the nation’s history. Snowden downloaded a vast trove of documents on American surveillance programs and has been leaking them to the press. House Intelligence Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., told NBC’s Meet the Press that he believes Snowden was assisted in stealing the information. Rogers…

Okinawa: Nago re-elects anti-US airbase mayor

A Japanese city mayor opposed to a plan to relocate a US military base on the island of Okinawa to his area has been re-elected. Susumu Inamine told his supporters that the poll was about one issue – the base – and the people of Nago had spoken. Okinawa is home to 30,000 US troops. Many residents associate the US bases with accidents, pollution and crime. The US and Japan first agreed in 1996 to shift the Futenma Air Station from a more congested part of Okinawa to Nago. Mr Inamine’s victory is the latest setback to the long-stalled move….

Italy reform deal puts Berlusconi back centre stage

Italy’s controversial ex-PM Silvio Berlusconi has returned to the centre of the political stage, striking a reform deal with a centre-left rival. Berlusconi was thrown out of parliament in 2013 after a tax fraud conviction. But he still heads the opposition Forza Italia party and held lengthy talks with Democratic Party (PD) leader Matteo Renzi late on Saturday. Under their agreement, he will back electoral and constitutional proposals aimed at making Italy more governable. The current electoral system has left Italy with a series of shaky coalitions. Last year’s general election left no party strong enough to govern alone, until…

Syria says Interfax Assad comments on not giving up power inaccurate

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad delivers a speech to Syria’s parliament in Damascus, June 3, 2012, in this handout photograph released by Syria’s national news agency SANA. CREDIT: REUTERS/SANA/HANDOUT – Syrian state media dismissed as “not accurate” a report by news agency Interfax that President Bashar al-Assad told visiting Russian parliamentarians he has no intention of giving up power and the issue is not up for discussion. Assad was quoted as telling the visitors days ahead of an internationally sponsored peace conference on Syria that “if we wanted to give up, we would have done so at the very beginning. We are on…
