Syria foes ‘to meet face-to-face’ at Geneva II talks Syria’s opposition and government will meet “in the same room” in Geneva on Saturday after the first day of a peace conference ended with no direct talks. UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who held talks with both sides on Friday, said they all understood that the conference was trying to “save Syria”. The two sides have blamed each other for a lack of progress. Diplomats say they are now aiming at small concessions such as local truces rather than an overall peace deal. Mr Brahimi has spent three days attempting to get the two sides to meet each other. On…

Fraternity expelled over MLK-themed party

Photos on social media depicted partygoers wearing stereotypical hip-hop clothes and posing with hollowed-out watermelon cups. PHOENIX — Arizona State University severed ties with the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity Thursday night, only days after a party over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend depicting racial stereotypes drew harsh criticism from civil rights leaders. The university released a statement saying it has notified the fraternity that its recognition as a fraternity chapter at ASU has been permanently revoked. Revoking recognition means the 65-year-old local chapter is no longer affiliated with ASU. The group won’t be listed on the university’s website and cannot…

Syria peace talks on verge of collapse before they begin

(Reuters) – Syria’s first peace talks were on the verge of collapsing on Friday before they began, with the opposition refusing to meet President Bashar al-Assad’s delegation and the government threatening to bring its team home. The government rejected the demand outright and said its negotiators would return home unless serious talks began within a day. “If no serious work sessions are held by (Saturday), the official Syrian delegation will leave Geneva due to the other…
