UN urges end to ransom payments to terrorist groups

The UN Security Council has approved a resolution urging countries to stop paying ransoms to terrorist groups. The UK-drafted resolution is designed to put pressure on governments. The British UN ambassador said al-Qaida-linked groups had made at least $105m (£63m; 77m euros) in ransoms for hostages in three-and-a-half years. The resolution did not introduce new legal obligations as states are already required not to pay kidnap ransoms under agreement adopted in 2001. It was passed unanimously by the 15-member Security Council on Monday. ‘Break the cycle’ “We estimate that in the last three and a half years, al-Qaeda-affiliated and other…

CREDIT: REUTERS/YAZAN HOMSY – Light arms supplied by the United States are flowing to “moderate” Syrian rebel factions in the south of the country and U.S. funding for months of further deliveries has been approved by Congress, according U.S. and European security officials. The weapons, most of which are moving to non-Islamist Syrian rebels via Jordan, include a variety of small arms, as well as some more powerful weapons, such as anti-tank rockets. The deliveries do not include weapons such as shoulder-launched…

Sochi’s mayor says homosexuality not accepted in his region

(Reuters) – The mayor of Sochi, the Russian city hosting the Winter Olympics next month, said homosexuality was not accepted in his Caucasus region, but that gay visitors would be welcome at the Games if they respected Russian laws. Russia’s stance on gay rights, including laws introduced last year to ban the dissemination of “gay propaganda” among children, has drawn strong criticism from Western states and gay rights groups in the run-up to the Games, casting a shadow over President Vladimir Putin’s $50-billion showpiece event. In remarks to be broadcast on Monday, Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov told the BBC’s Panorama program: “We just say that it…
