Germany’s Walter Steinmeier said they agreed in talks in Berlin on a “package of measures” that paves the way for a bilateral ceasefire. Fighting in eastern Ukraine has increased since a shaky 10-day ceasefire expired on Monday. Hundreds have been killed since a pro-Russian rebellion began in the east.

In his nightly Venezuelan television broadcast De Zurda, Maradona said he felt “bitter” and “angry” after watching Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Switzerland on Tuesday. “I have the impression we haven’t really got going,” said the former national team player and coach, adding the squad was showing only 40 per cent of its potential. “There are players who haven’t really started to play in the World Cup,” he said. “If Argentina do not wake up, then we are going to…

Lawmakers rally for veteran who could lose house for hanging flag

By Tim Devaney Two Florida congressmen are sticking up for a Jacksonville man who may lose his home for hanging an American flag on his front porch. Larry Murphree is facing foreclosure this month after the 73-year-old veteran refused to pay $8,000 in fines for hanging a small flag in a flower pot. The flag violated the rules of the homeowners association that he belongs to. Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.), vice chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, fired back at the homeowners association on Tuesday, and said Murphree’s constitutional rights are being trampled. “When did we relinquish our common sense…

Immigration advocates to Obama: Go big

By Mike Lillis – 07/02/14 06:01 AM EDT House Democrats and other immigration reformers are calling on President Obama to go big when it comes to administrative changes in deportation policy. For months, liberal reform advocates on and off Capitol Hill have urged Obama to tap his executive powers to stop deporting certain qualified groups of undocumented immigrants while waiting to see if House Republicans would take up reform legislation this year. But in the wake of Obama’s Monday Rose Garden speech vowing unilateral action, some reformers want the president to go far beyond a limited expansion of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)…

Protesters chant ‘Deport, deport!’ as immigrant families enter California

Angry protesters blocked three buses carrying immigrant families to a border patrol processing station in California on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported. More than 100 protesters waived American flags and chanted “USA!” “Impeach Obama!” and “Deport, Deport!” as they waited for the buses coming from Texas to arrive at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection station in Murrieta, nearly an hour away from San Diego. Federal authorities tried to steer away from the entrance, according to USA TODAY, but the crowd blocked the street and forced the buses to reroute to a San Diego border facility. The standoff comes after Murrieta’s…
