White House frustrated CIA kept it in dark

By Justin Sink White House officials are frustrated that the CIA didn’t immediately inform them that a German intelligence officer spying for the U.S. had been captured by Germany, according to a report Wednesday in The New York Times. President Obama was unaware of the arrest a full day after it occurred, administration officials told the paper, putting him in a precarious position when he phoned German Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss the situation in Ukraine. White House press secretary Josh Earnest has said Merkel did not raise the issue during the call, but officials in the White House are reportedly concerned that the…

Edward Snowden seeks to extend stay in Russia

Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden has filed papers asking Russian authorities to extend his asylum for another year, his lawyer said Wednesday. “The procedure is very simple if a citizen of any country would like to stay and live in Russia,” lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told the Russian-based news service RT. “In this case we are talking about Snowden, so we have fulfilled the procedure to receive temporary asylum,” Kucherena said Wednesday. Snowden, whose asylum expires July 31, was a contractor for Booz Allen Hamilton when he leaked details of U.S. surveillance programs to The Guardian and The Washington Post. The first…

Putin says Russia not seeking international isolation

(Reuters) – President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia, facing the threat of new sanctions over the Ukraine crisis, wanted to avoid international isolation but would strongly defend its national interests. “We will never pursue isolationism. We will always be part of the international community,” Putin said during a meeting with representatives of the Civic Chamber, a consultative body which monitors the work of the government and parliament. “You and I must properly define national interests. We have learnt how to do that,” he said. “We will do this persistently but correctly, carefully and … strongly.” The United States…

Russia test launches first new space rocket since Soviet era

(Reuters) – Russia launched its first new design of space rocket since the Soviet era from the northern military space port of Plesetsk on Wednesday, aiming to break its reliance on foreign suppliers as well as the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The Angara rocket’s quiet debut was in marked contrast to the live broadcast of an embarrassing aborted first launch attempt, watched by President Vladimir Putin via video link from the Kremlin. “The first test launch of the light-class Angara-1.2PP space rocket was conducted by the Air and Space Defence Forces,” Russia’s Defence Ministry said in a statement, cited by…
