Families split by immigration status hope executive action brings unity

AVONDALE, Ariz. — Mexican mother of four Norma Bernal was taking a stroll beside the dusty rail tracks that carve through this sprawling Phoenix suburb when she was stopped and questioned by local police. Living in the country illegally and unable to provide identification, she panicked, gave a false name and was arrested on suspicion of trespassing on railroad property. Her U.S.-born daughter Julisa looked on, aghast. “Because she gave a false name, they couldn’t pull up her records, and they were like, ‘You could be a felon … Someone could be looking for you right now.’ So they took…

Myanmar house chief rules out 2015 charter change

AP Pablo Martinez Monsivais, File

The Associated Press  YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar’s influential parliament speaker said Tuesday that any changes to the military-drafted constitution that bars opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming president will not take effect before next year’s election. Shwe Mann told reporters in the capital, Naypyitaw, that the current parliament will review constitution amendment suggestions and hold a referendum in May to change some clauses, but that an amended charter would come into force only after the new parliament elected in 2015 is seated. Confusion greeted his remarks, which left open the question of whether the clause affecting Suu Kyi…

NATO leader sees ‘serious military buildup’ in Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg speaks during a news conference in Kabul

(Reuters) – NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg denounced on Tuesday what he called a serious Russian military buildup both inside Ukraine and on the Russian side of the border and urged Moscow to pull back its troops. Stoltenberg said NATO saw movement of troops, equipment, tanks, artillery and also of advanced air defense systems in violation of a ceasefire agreement. Russia denies providing arms or troops to support a separatist pro-Russian rebellion in eastern Ukraine, which began after the removal of a Kremlin-oriented Ukrainian president by mass protests in February. A ceasefire was agreed in early September, but fighting flared again recently. Stoltenberg told reporters…

Palestinians kill four in Jerusalem synagogue attack

An Israeli police officer gestures as he holds a weapon near scene of an attack at a Jerusalem synagogue

(Reuters) – Two Palestinians armed with a meat cleaver and a gun killed four people in a Jerusalem synagogue on Tuesday before being shot dead by police, the deadliest such incident in six years in the holy city amid a surge in religious conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to respond with a “heavy hand”, and again accused Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of inciting violence in Jerusalem. Abbas condemned the attack, which comes after a month of unrest fueled in part by a dispute over Jerusalem’s holiest shrine. A worshipper at the service in the Kehillat Bnei Torah…
