Myanmar parliament votes to keep military veto

A vote in Myanmar’s parliament has failed to remove the army’s veto over constitutional change, dealing a blow to hopes for fuller democracy. The bill received a majority of MPs’ votes but not the 75% needed to pass. Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy is expected to see big gains against the ruling party in an election likely to take place in the autumn. The NLD swept the last free general election in 1990 but the then-ruling military junta ignored the results. Ms Suu Kyi is barred from running for president because her two sons hold British not…

Colombia acts on massacres – punishing whistleblower and promoting officers

Sergeant Carlos Mora started to suspect there was something fishy about his brigade’s combat kills when he was posted to an intelligence unit in the region of Norte de Santander in north-east Colombia in 2006. After a sudden spike in the number of “positive” results, he noticed that the corpses of supposed leftwing guerrillas killed in skirmishes with troops seemed oddly placed, and that weapons found next to the bodies often matched those previously confiscated from common criminals. Mora reported his suspicions to his superior officers, but was met with insults and harassment, and found himself sent on increasingly dangerous assignments. When…

The world ‘largely likes’ the US, says global survey

A global survey of 40 countries by the Pew Research Center finds that large numbers of people have a favourable opinion of the United States, its economy and the US-led fight against the Islamic State. Overall, the US is largely seen in a positive light, with a global median of 69% of people saying they viewed the US favourably. That’s up from 65% in 2013 and 2014, says Pew. But when it comes to the issue of post-9/11 interrogation techniques – which many consider to be torture – the US has received a worldwide rebuke.   US v China   Chinese and…

A prison worker accused of helping two convicted killers break out of a maximum-security New York jail earlier this month smuggled them vital tools that were concealed inside frozen chunks of hamburger meat, according to a report published late Monday. Joyce Mitchell, 51, has been charged with felony promoting prison contraband and misdemeanor criminal facilitation in connection with the escape of Richard Matt and David Sweat from Clinton County Correctional Facility on the night of June 5-6. Court documents allege that Mitchell provided the men with hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch and a screwdriver bit in the weeks prior to…
