Husband of prison worker ‘blown away’ by wife’s plot to help murderers escape

The husband of a prison worker charged with helping two convicted killers escape from an upstate New York prison “can’t stand by her” and was “blown away” when she revealed a plot to murder him, his lawyer said on Thursday. Lyle Mitchell, who like his wife, Joyce, worked at the Clinton correctional facility in Dannemora, New York, did not know about the escape plans until they were discovered missing on 6 June, his lawyer, Peter Dumas, told NBC’s Today television program. The two convicts broke through steel walls, slipped through a steam pipe and emerged from a manhole outside the 170-year-old maximum-security…

South Carolina shooting suspect seemed troubled, drawn to white supremacy

His uncle worried he was cooped up in his room too much. The few images of him found easily online suggest he had a fascination with white supremacy, publicly embracing its symbols. And for his birthday this year, his father bought the young man a pistol, the uncle said. Dylann Roof, a 21-year-old white man, was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of having fatally shot nine people at a historic African-American church in South Carolina. The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating Wednesday’s attack as a hate crime, motivated by racism or other prejudice. Those who know Roof described a…

No agreement is in sight,” Jeroen Dijsselbloem, chairman of the Eurogroup, told a news conference. Ministers sent a strong signal that…
