Supreme Court blocks Obama immigration actions

By Lydia Wheeler and Jordan Fabian – 06/23/16 10:41 AM EDT The Supreme Court dealt a critical blow to President Obama’s immigration policies on Thursday, deadlocking in a 4-4 decision over two controversial programs the White House wants to implement. The tie vote leaves in place a lower court ruling that blocks a program allowing undocumented workers who are parents of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents to remain in the United States for three years and to apply for work permits. It also prevents the administration from expanding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program issued by Obama in…

Suspended House Speaker Eduardo Cunha attends a news conference, in Brasilia, Brazil, June 21, 2016. REUTERS/ADRIANO MACHADO Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday indicted suspended speaker of the lower house Eduardo Cunha on charges of money laundering and illegal currency dealing, dragging the powerful politician further into the sweeping scandal involving state-oil company Petrobras. “There is concrete evidence that deputy Eduardo Cunha received (illicit) funds,” Teori Zavascki, the supreme court justice overseeing the case, said in the ruling. It is the second time charges have been accepted against Cunha in the so-called Car Wash investigation, which centers on kickbacks paid to…

Russian servicemen equip an Iskander tactical missile system at the Army-2015 international military-technical forum in Kubinka, outside Moscow, Russia, June 17, 2015. REUTERS/SERGEI KARPUKHIN Russia is likely to deploy advanced nuclear-capable missiles in its European exclave of Kaliningrad by 2019, casting the move as a reply to a U.S.-backed missile shield, and may one day put them in Crimea too, sources close to its military predict. That would fuel what is already the worst standoff between Russia and the West since the Cold War and put a swathe of territory in NATO members Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in the…
