Balloons. Confetti. Signs. Big hats. It’s the moment US election enthusiasts have been waiting four years for. It’s convention season. This week kicks off with the Democratic National Convention – four days of party events leading up to the main moment: crowning the presidential nominee. Of course this year, things are going to look a bit different. Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s convention, Covid-19 changes and all. What is the Democratic National Convention? It is where the Democratic Party comes together to formally name – and hype up – their candidates. You may be thinking, ‘isn’t…
Republicans dismiss Trump proposal to delay election
Senate Republicans, including Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a close ally of the White House, are dismissing President Trump’s suggestion Thursday to delay the November elections because of the coronavirus pandemic. “I have concerns about mail-in ballots being the exclusive way to cast votes, but I don’t believe we should delay the elections. I want to reopen the economy in a sound way. I want people to go back to school safely,” Graham, who is up for reelection in November, told reporters Thursday morning. “In South Carolina, we had a very large primary in June and were able to do it…
Obama calls filibuster ‘Jim Crow relic,’ backs new Voting Rights Act bill
Former President Obama on Thursday called the Senate filibuster rule a “Jim Crow relic” and said it should be ended to help pass legislation that would restore a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. Obama made the remarks while delivering a eulogy for civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), who died earlier this month at the age of 80. The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act would make it harder for states to enact racially suspect voting restrictions. “Once we pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, we should keep marching,” Obama said. “And if all this takes eliminating the…
Donald Trump suggests delay to 2020 US presidential election
Donald Trump has suggested November’s presidential election be postponed, saying increased postal voting could lead to fraud and inaccurate results. He floated a delay until people could “properly, securely and safely” vote. There is little evidence to support Mr Trump’s claims but he has long railed against mail-in voting which he has said would be susceptible to fraud. US states want to make postal voting easier due to public health concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. Under the US constitution, Mr Trump does not have the authority to postpone the election himself. Any delay would have to be approved by Congress….

Dozens of mourners ‘killed by Boko Haram’ at a funeral in north Nigeria
At least 65 people have lost their lives after suspected Boko Haram militants opened fire on a funeral in Nigeria’s north-eastern state of Borno. Gunmen arrived on motorcycles and in vans at the village near the state capital, Maiduguri, on Saturday, eyewitnesses say. A number of mourners were reportedly killed straight away, while others died trying to chase off the attackers. There has been an increase in Islamist attacks across the region. Local government official Muhammed Bulama said he thought the latest attack was in revenge for the killing of 11 Boko Haram fighters by the villagers two weeks ago….
Dan Coats, Trump’s top intel official, to depart White House
WASHINGTON – Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats is stepping down soon after a tenure that featured clashes with President Donald Trump over Russia, North Korea, and other national security issues. Trump confirmed the departure Sunday in an email. The president also announced he will replace Coats with Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Texas. “I would like to thank Dan for his great service to our Country,” Trump said. As for his new nominee to the post, Trump noted on Twitter that Ratcliffe is a former U.S. Attorney who “will lead and inspire greatness for the Country he loves.” The Senate must still confirm Ratcliffe as the new…
Donald Trump’s power dynamic with Nancy Pelosi will be on full display at the State of the Union
WASHINGTON – When President Donald Trump climbs the rostrum to deliver his second State of the Union address, he’ll share the stage with the Democrat who has become his most vexing political rival: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. White House aides say Trump intends to deliver a speech focused on bipartisanship. But sitting just over his left shoulder in the House chamber, the California Democrat will be a stark reminder of the precarious state of his proposed border wall, the negotiations to avoid another government shutdown and his legislative agenda for the next two years. Associates of Pelosi and Trump said the president…
